80 Million year old fossil shark found on Australia's West Coast.
It looks like something out of "Alien," but has more in common with "Jurassic Park.”
It's a rare frilled shark that has been caught by a fisherman in Australia, where no one remembers ever seeing one before.
With a mouth packed full of needle-like teeth and a body like an eel, the six-foot long frilled shark is sometimes described as a fish "fossil" that dates back 80 million years.
David Guillot says that it's like nothing he or his fellow fisherman have ever seen in the deep waters in Australia's south west.
"It was really prehistoric looking, freaky really," Guillot said.
He caught the fish while trawling for fish at 1,100 meters a week ago, and thought he might have discovered some new type of shark.
"I've been fishing 30 years and never saw anything like it. So I brought it in," he said by phone from his boat Thursday. "Honestly we thought we had caught a brand new species, maybe discovered something wild.”
The shark is known to live at extreme depths in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, but are very infrequently caught because their habitat is mostly off limits to fishing, said Simon Boaz of Australia's South East Trawl Fishing Industry Association.
Guillot said that the frilled shark was still alive when he got it to the surface. But it did not live after being pulled up from the frigid depths. So he offered it to a local museum.

Se trata de un raro ejemplar de tiburón, llamado tiburón anguila que ha sido capturado por un pescador, en Australia, donde nadie recuerda haber visto algo parecido anteriormente.
Con una boca llena de dientes afilados como agujas y un cuerpo parecido al de una anguila, el tamaño de éste, es de 1 metro 80 centímetros y a veces es nombrado como pez fósil, su especie se remonta ha unos 80 millones de años.
David Guillot retrató que no se asemeja a nada de lo que él o sus compañeros pescadores, hayan visto jamás en las aguas profundas del suroeste de Australia.
“Parecía muy prehistórico, muy raro,” dijo Guillot. Capturó al tiburón a1.100 metros de profundidad, hace una semana, es más, puede que se haya descubierto una nueva especie de tiburón.
“Llevo pescando 30 años y nunca había visto nada igual. Así que lo traje para ver qué era,” dijo por teléfono desde su barco el jueves. “Honestamente creíamos que habíamos capturado una nueva especie, incluso haber descubierto algo increíble.”
Este tiburón se conoce por vivir en profundidades extremas, habitan tanto en el Océano Atlántico como en el Pacífico, pero no suelen ser vistos muy frecuentemente porque normalmente viven en zonas restringidas a los pescadores, mencionó Simon Boaz, de la Asociación de la Industria de Pesca de Arrastre del Sureste de Australia.
Guillot dijo que el tiburón anguila seguía vivo cuando lo cogió en la superficie. Pero no sobrevivió después de ser sacado de las frígidas profundidades. Así que lo ofreció al museo local.
